According to the legend Wartburg Castle was founded
in 1067. Martin Luther hided here after his excommunication under the name Junker Jörg. In a small chamber he translated the Bible into German. Also the German poet Goethe often was at guest on the Wartburg. In 1999 the Wartburg was declared to be
an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ernst Reuter was the mayor of West Berlin from 1948 to 1953 during the time of the Cold War. His name is linked to the Berlin Airlift which happened during the Soviet imposed Berlin Blockade.
