The historic city contains the Alcazar palace, an ancient Roman aqueduct and the cathedral. The old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Moorish poets describe it as a ''pearl set in emeralds'' in allusion to the brilliant colour of the buildings and the wood around them.
