Sanssouci was the summer residence of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. The palace was built after plans of the king himself by architect Knobelsdorff in 1745 as a ''Maison de Plaisance''.

Cecilienhof was the location of the Potsdam Conference between July 17th and
August 2nd, 1945, where Prime Minister Winston Chruchill, President Harry S. Truman and Communist Party General Secretary Joseph Stalin gathered to decide how
to administer the defeated Nazi Germany, which surrendered nine weeks earlier.
