In the Middle Ages it was the frontier post of the archbishop of Magdeburg. In the 16th century it was reconstructed to a Renaissance castle. Today it is the most important Baroque Castle of Saxony-Anhalt. Later it was often extended and reconstructed. About 1500 King Louis XII initiated the reconstruction to a Renaissance Palace with a large garden (which does not exist anymore).
