Ernst Reuter was the mayor of West Berlin from 1948 to 1953 during the time of the Cold War. His name is linked to the Berlin Airlift which happened during the Soviet imposed Berlin Blockade.

Emporer Wilhelm II ordered the construction of the monumental church in honor of his grandfather Wilhelm I. During World War II the church was destroyed during a bombing raid in 1943. The ruins were kept as a memorial.
