The French Renaissance style here merged with classical Italian architecture. Its spectacular double-helix staircase is said to be designed by Leonard da Vinci. Around 100BC the Romans started to fortify the hilltop. The fortress became famous during the Albigensian Crusades, when the city was a stronghold of the Cathars.
