When the forces of Tariq ibn-Ziyad entered Cordoba it became equitable that they had to share the place with the Christians. With the establishment of the emirate of Cordoba the Christians had to give up their part of the Mezquita. In 1236 when Cordoba was recaptured from the Moors the mosque was reconsecrated as a Christian church. It is the only square of this kind in Andalusia. At Roman times was here the main entry to the amphitheatre.
