Dornburg Castles are situated above the river Saale on a steep rugged shell limestone rock. The 3 grand
ducal castles are from different epochs: gothic, renaissance and rococo. They are famous for their
marvelous gardens and the visits of Johann-Wolfgang
von Goethe, who loved the view. The foggy meadows inspired him to write the ''Erlkönig'' here.

The 3 Dornburg Castles were built in different epochs. The ''Old Castle'' dates back to the Royal Estate of Otto I and was first mentioned in 937. The rococo palace and the renaissance palace are nicely framed by the Palace Gardens
