The construction of the Mezquita started in 784 AD at the site of an old cathedral. When the forces of Tariq ibn-Ziyad entered Cordoba it became equitable that they had to share the place with the Christians. With the establishment of the emirate of Cordoba the Christians had to give up their part of the Mezquita. In 1236 when Cordoba was recaptured from the Moors the mosque was reconsecrated as a Christian church.
